EMPLOYMENT

Employment

Regarding employment, Frampton’s latest position is: “It is estimated that the Proposed Scheme could support a total of 830 direct, indirect and induced net additional FTE jobs within the East Midlands, including 570 for residents of West Northamptonshire.”
Although lower than the original claims of 330 full time roles during construction and 955 FTE jobs once in operation, these figures are still more than is estimated elsewhere in the developer’s documents, where they admit these figures are more likely to be 210 during construction and 610 during operation. Their 36% exaggeration is down to a 27% one.

The developer, in their own submission, say most employees will come from Milton Keynes. As a concession to increased traffic caused by employees, they are proposing a cycle parking area bigger that the one at Milton Keynes station. How realistic is it that large numbers of staff will cycle from Milton Keynes? Another empty gesture to placate the planning process.

Quote from Logistics Manager website – March 2023: “Recent data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed that demand for warehouse staff in the UK rose by 43.2% at the end of 2022 when compared with pre-pandemic levels. Staff shortages have been a serious issue for the logistics industry as a whole for several years and problems hiring and retaining warehouse workers are a large part of this."  A survey by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) in June 2022 revealed that 85% of companies surveyed had experienced shortages  in warehouse operatives in the two years prior.

The whole region is suffering from a recruitment crisis in this sector. Milton Keynes is lucky enough to enjoy full employment (when there are more vacancies than people looking for work.) This means people can be choosy about the roles they go into, and they are not choosing logistics. MK is setting itself up as the IT city of the UK – that’s what many of our young people are aspiring to – not heaving boxes around in a warehouse or driving long, long hours and being away from family for days at a time.

Framptons and Frontier are carefully selecting the choicest morsels to support their desire to build nine enormous warehouses on the edge of a country village.

A mix of B1, B2, B8' These are small industry, offices and warehouses

*There are no offices and no small industry

Employment - Reasons to Object
  • Developer’s own employment claims are exaggerated by about 27%.
  • Warehouse employment is in crisis - no one wants these jobs.
  • Uncertain these warehouses will be let, given the number of empty ones in this region.
  • Investment in robots means warehouses can hold more products and process them faster than if relying on humans
  • Warehouse work is unskilled, poorly paid and insecure. Average annual staff turnover in the UK is 37% (3.6% for all UK industries.)
